Alpha Alpha Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta
The History Department at the University of Texas at Brownsville proudly sponsors the Alpha Alpha Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. Phi Alpha Theta is (in its own words) “a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of History through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among Historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of History together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist Historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.”
The Alpha Alpha Mu chapter has long been part of the experiences of history majors at UTB. We initiate new members at the start of the fall and spring semesters and meet regularly to discuss chapter activities, which can range from local trips to community service programs here in the Valley. A highlight of the year is the sponsorship of a guest speaker. Chosen because of his or her dedicated service to the study of history, the speaker gives a formal address to both the membership and interested individuals from the university and local community. In addition, the university recently (2009) accorded the chapter status as a student club with the right to participate in student activity events around campus while promoting the professional study of history.
For eligibility, undergraduate students must complete at least 12 semester hours in history (4 courses) with a GPA of at least 3.1 in history, and have a GPA of 3.0 or better overall, while graduate students should have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their master's degree in history and have a GPA of better than 3.5.
The one-time initiation fee of $40.00 per student is payable at the time of initiation, after the UTB Student Activities office has formally verified eligibility. The fee includes a membership certificate and four issues of the journal, The Historian. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta is a lifetime membership.
