Professor Terry Tomlin holds an M.M.E. from Vandercook College of Music, an M.A. in woodwind performance from Eastern Illinois University, and a B.A. from the University of Kansas. Tomlin is a recipient of the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award and the 2004 recipient of The University of Texas Chancellor’s Council Outstanding Teaching Excellence Award.
In demand as a performer, he has performed with the touring Jimmy Dorsey and Russ Morgan big bands, and in concerts throughout the United States and Mexico. In jazz master classes, Tomlin has participated with New York trumpet artist Marvin Stamm and Los Angeles woodwind artist Gary Foster, as well as master classes with Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. As director of the UTB/TSC jazz bands, Tomlin has led the One O’clock Jazz Band to win awards at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival, the Greeley, Colorado Jazz Festival, where Tomlin was named Outstanding Director, and the Mobile, Ala., Jazz Festival. The UTB/TSC Jazz Band has also performed in Washington, D.C., for the Justice Department. Tomlin is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association and the International Association of Jazz Educators.
