“One of the best classical guitar programs in the United States.” – Tony Morris, Classical Guitar Alive!, National Public Radio
The UTB guitar ensemble program has grown into several groups which now include two classical ensembles, a jazz ensemble under the direction of Clay Moore, and the guitar orchestra. UTB was one of the first university guitar programs in the United States to develop extensive ensemble opportunities for its guitarists and this environment has become central to the rapid technical and musical growth of its participants.
The UTB Guitar Orchestra performed on the Austin City Limits stage with the Miro String Quartet for a live radio broadcast to over one million listeners on Austin Public Radio. This orhcestra was the first universiy group ever invited to perform for the Guitar Foundation of America annual convention. They have also performed in Austin’s Mexican-American Cultural Center and at the Texas State Capitol.
The One O’clock Guitar Ensemble was the featured performance of the Katy Guitar Festival (Houston area) in 2011 and this group performed for the Chancellor’s Council event (held in Austin’s largest indoor areana, the Erwin Center) and for the UT System Santa Rita awards at the request of the UT System Chancellor, Dr. Francisco Cigarroa.
The UTB Guitar Orchestra has been featured twice on the internationally syndicated radio program “Guitar Alive!”, broadcast on National Public Radio, and it has been recognized as a large part of what makes UTB one of the leading classical guitar programs in the United States.
Our students have placed in the top ten in regional, national, and international solo competitions. They have distinguished themselves individually in the UT-Dallas Texas Solo Guitar Competition, as top prize winners in the Eastfield Collegiate Competition, Houston’s Classical Minds Festival, UT Pan Am Competition, and as top ten performers at the Corpus Christi Young Artists Competition from a field representing the world’s top music conservatories.
