The UTB Indoor Drumline, under the direction of student assistants Michael Segura and Denisha Trevino, made their debut at the BISD Night of Percussion on March 6, 2013.
Marimba Reyna del Valley performed throughout the Rio Grande Valley during the Spring 2013 semester, including the Valley Day of Percussion in McAllen, Texas.
Sophomore percussion majors, Justin Wilson and Manny Trevino won first and second place (respectively) at the 2013 Island Marimba Competition at Texas A&M Corpus on April 27, 2013. Justin and Manny were also invited to perform their solos at the Valley Day of Percussion on May 2, 2013, in McAllen, Texas.
The UTB Percussion Ensemble performed as guest ensemble with Dr. Brian Zator (Texas A&M Commerce) on marimba at the 2012 Valley Day of Percussion in McAllen, Texas.
Junior percussion major, Mathew Lorick had several percussion solos and ensemble pieces published by international publishers Percussion Music Europe and DutchMusic Partners. In addition, he wrote a marimba solo, Cactus Road, for the PASIC contest.
Mark Eichenberger will be joining the Department of Music as Lecturer of Percussion in Fall 2013. Mark is a D.M.A. candidate in Percussion Performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he received his M.M. in 2007. He has appeared as a soloist with the University of Illinois Wind Symphony and Wind Orchestra as well as the Overton High School Wind Ensemble from Memphis, TN. In 2010, he was selected as one of the thirty finalists to compete in the TROMP International Percussion Competition, held in the Netherlands. While in school, he studied many different styles of world music including Brazilian, Afro Cuban, and West African drumming, as well as Steel Pan and Balinese Gamelan. Professor Eichenberger has also been involved with Drum Corps International for seventeen years including five years as a performer in the Phantom Regiment and three years as an instructor for the Santa Clara Vanguard. He currently works with the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps from Tempe, Arizona. Mark is a member of the Vic Firth Education Team and is an artist with Majestic and Mapex. The UTB Percussion area hosted Jason Smyth-Tomkins (Australia) as an Artist in Residence during the first two weeks of the spring semester. Jason is on the faculty at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM), CQ University. Jason is a graduate of CQ University and Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. He currently lectures in jazz and contemporary drum-set performance, jazz and commercial ensemble, theory and jazz history at CQCM. He provided master classes and lectures on jazz drum set and history.
Dr. Nevill performed with Chaac Percusiones Mexico at the 2012 ORFF Conference in St. Louis, Missouri in November and the TMEA conference in February 2013.
