The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) announced that we have been granted national accreditation for our graduate program in Counseling and Guidance. This is one of the most difficult accrediting bodies in Education and Psychology. Only two UT System universities are accredited: UT San Antonio and now UT Brownsville. Also, only 11 universities in Texas are accredited from almost 80 programs.

CACREP Board of Directors met January 13-15, 2011 for the purpose of rendering accreditation decisions. Two programs housed in our College were reviewed under the 2001 CACREP Standards. The Board made the following decisions:

Accredited: Eight-Year Period through March 31, 2019

Accredited: Eight-year Period through March 31, 2019

According to Dr. Carol L. Bobby, CACREP president and CEO, "the above accreditation decisions were based on the Board's extensive review of the self-study documents, the visiting team's report, and your institution's response to the visiting team's report. Programs receiving accreditation for an eigth-year period deserve to be commended for the work they completed throughout the accreditation process. This in indeed a worthy achievement."

This is a great moment for our College of Education of the University of Texas at Brownsville. Congratulations and thanks to Dr. Selma Yznaga, who lead in this accreditation effort, Dr. Olivia Rivas, Dr. Alma G. Leal, Dr. James Jackson, and Dr. Melissa Alvarado.
