The Brownsville Independent School District’s new Brownsville Early College High School (BECHS) in partnership with UTB/TSC has received TEA’s top rating of exemplary.
The school’s first cohort of students, last year’s freshmen and next year’s sophomores, had a 100 percent passing rate on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills reading test, while 93 percent passed the math portion of the test. Students at BECHS must be the first in their family to attain a college degree. The school offers students the chance to graduate with a high school diploma and an associate of arts degree, including 60 college credit hours. The Brownsville Early College High School is an educational choice school open to Brownsville ISD students entering the ninth grade. It is designed to enable students to achieve two years of college credit, tuition-free, at the same time they are earning a high school diploma. Additionally, BECHS is designed to boost graduation rates and increase the number of high school students prepared for post-secondary success. (August 2009)
