Welcome to the Alternative Certification Program (ACP) at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC). You have chosen to enter one of the most important professions which is educating children. You will be entrusted with parents’ most precious possession which is their children. In addition, you have become part of the public school’s community and will have the opportunity to participate in many wonderful activities at your school. You will be encouraging parental involvement at your campus and getting to know all of your students’ families.
At our program, we constantly strive to make all of our decisions based on what is best for our future teachers and the children that they will instruct. This is a wonderful philosophy that can guide you throughout your classroom experience. We are committed to excellence and this requires all of us to engage in lifelong learning through dialogue with our colleagues, reading professional publications, and attending staff development trainings and workshops.
You were selected to participate in our program based on your excellent skills and experiences. You were chosen because of your commitment to children and your desire to excel at teaching. A major part of being successful as a new teacher will be your willingness to ask questions and to grow in your knowledge of educational theory and practice. Please note that you may have an occasional challenging day with your students, colleagues or administration. However, you will have more positive days that far outshine the challenging ones. Please ask your school district mentors, ACP supervisors, grade level/subject area team teachers, campus administration, and ACP staff any questions that may concern your profession.
Once again, welcome to our Alternative Certification Program and the teaching profession. Please inform our ACP staff how we can assist you to have a successful first year experience, as well as, a great start making a powerful difference in the lives of children.
