Applied Microwave & Electromagnetic Laboratory

The research activities in the electromagnetic and microwave area cover a broad spectrum of applications from space to medicine. In particular, AMEL research focuses on both the theoretical and experimental aspects of electromagnetic theory; electromagnetic wave scattering; microwave and millimeter wave circuit; complex media; microwave wireless communications; and microstrip antennas. The lab is designed to fulfill both education and research needs in the field of microwave and telecommunications. This project is part of the strategic plan of the department which is already working with local and state major industries to undertake both long-term strategic research and core technology R&D projects. AMEL supports a hi-tech design center that is used by all the students belonging to the engineering program and by all the researchers interested in this cutting-edge area of engineering.

Fluid Dynamics Laboratory

The research activities of the fluid dynamics laboratory are centered on studying fundamental aspects of fluid flows with application in areas such as heat exchangers, aerodynamics of bluff and streamlined bodies, and inertial confinement fusion among others. In particular, the current research activities in the low speed regime include the effect of heat transfer on fluid flow around circular cylinders. This research is being done using water and wind tunnel facilities. On the high speed side, a new unique gas dynamics facility, a shock tube, is being designed and will become part of the fluid dynamics laboratory.

The Mach number ranges for the shock waves in the facility will range from 1.01 - 1.5. The shock tube will be used to study instabilities in shock-accelerated flows, which has applications in areas such as inertial confinement fusion, supernova explosions etc."
