Science Content Workshops
Before the event, select undergraduate and graduate mentors attend science-content training on the current year’s theme at NASA Johnson Space Center to prepare them for their own activities as leads. Mentors attend lectures from NASA scientists and exclusive laboratory tours during their two-day visit.
Representatives from respective entity will travel to the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) to experience NSSD first hand (usually held the 2nd weekend of January). Experience will provide instrumental knowledge of logistics, coordination, challenges and methodology for NSSD event in order to replicate at respective University/Location.
A minimum of six weeks prior to the NSSD event, activity training is held at the host institution. The training is limited to 36 mentors.
Along with the NSSD event, the team conducts educator workshops for up to 30 local teachers. They receive training on NASA science content, related hands-on activities and additional resources for their classrooms.
This pre-NSSD event is open to the public and engages the community and families in NSSD-related activities and speakers. Keynote speakers share their story and current topics in their fields. This is followed by an interactive question-and-answer discussion. University students present hands-on activities before and after the evening presentation.
