President,
Juliet V. Garcia, Ph.D.

Dear Friend:

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College seeks to offer programs and support to our community that will present our region as one of Texas’ great treasures.  These goals include hiring award-winning faculty that are the very best in their fields of study and who inspire our students to continue attaining some of the highest passing rates on state accreditation exams.  The synergy that is created by our world-class faculty and student body is one that encourages the educational development critical to the prosperity of our community and beyond.

That development can also be hindered by very limited state funding support, which leaves students and faculty unable to cover costs for opportunities and awards that should be welcomed with joy.  Through the generosity of our donors, the Annual Fund is able to assist when public funding is inadequate or non-existent.  We would like to encourage you to be a part of the Annual Fund Campaign.  Your support helps makes a difference in events such as these:

  • In partnership with the Cameron-Willacy County Medical Alliance South, a financial assistance program was available to 27 students preparing for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
  • Student Maria Rivera was able to present an award-winning paper to the American Anthropological Association Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.
  • Faculty and student scientists from the Coastal Geology class were able to take a field trip to Galveston, TX, where they studied and compared water systems on the Laguna Madre, South Padre Island and the mouth of the Rio Grande River.
  • Doctoral Nursing student and UTB/TSC nursing instructor Dania Ochoa traveled to Vienna, Austria, to present her award-winning abstract at the International Nursing Research Congress.

When you believe in the dreams of students and faculty, you can help those dreams to become reality. Your participation in the Annual Fund Campaign is immensely important to furthering the work of our students and faculty members. Each gift helps advance the academic dreams and future of south Texas. I ask you to extend your generosity and be a part of the 2009 Annual Fund.  Thanks to your commitments, greater discoveries remain ahead.

Sincerely,
Juliet V. Garcia, Ph.D.
