Learning Enrichment Center Helps Students Meet TSI Standards
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – JULY 15, 2014 – The Learning Enrichment Center at The University of Texas at Brownsville is currently offering Texas Success Initiative (TSI) workshops geared toward helping students achieve the skills needed to become college-ready in reading, writing and math.
TSI Workshops are one-on-one sessions with peer tutors.
The TSI test, which has replaced the THEA, ASSET, ACCUPLACER and COMPASS, was developed by the Texas State Legislature to ensure student success at institutions of higher education. All incoming students are required to be academically assessed to determine their level of college readiness in reading, writing and math.
The Learning Enrichment Center’s TSI workshops, designed for students who have taken the TSI but did not meet the college readiness standards, are objective-based and individualized.
“The students will meet with an Instructional Specialist or one of the co-directors prior to registering for the workshops,” said Dr. Arlene Ready, Co-Director of the Learning Enrichment Center. “We review each student’s diagnostic results and recommend the appropriate workshops.”
Brittany Rodriguez, a 2014 Brownsville Veterans Memorial High School graduate, hopes to increase her TSI score that will enable her to enter UTB as a freshman.
“I attended the TSI math workshop for four days,” said Rodriguez. “It really helped me a lot.”
Students who are interested in preparing for or retaking the TSI test are encouraged to come by the Learning Enrichment Center, located in the Student Union, Room 2.10, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Workshops are being offered Monday through Thursday until Thursday, July 24. Each one-hour objective workshop costs $10.
