Chess has been an important part of our University as has acted as a metaphor of the vast human potential that our region holds. Coming from humble beginnings, the UTB Chess Team has developed into a force to be reckoned with in the world of Collegiate Chess.
The UTB Chess Team competes at the highest level at state, national and international tournaments, under the leadership of program director Russell Harwood and coached by International Grandmaster Bartek Macieja.
The Chess Team is given the highest-quality training. In addition, the students’ academic performance is monitored, and they are provided support and assistance, as needed. Students are recruited to the team also organize tournaments, hold chess camps, train area coaches, and make travel arrangements for out-of-town events.
The Chess Office also organizes and presents community outreach chess classes for parents and students on a regular basis, provides chess instruction to UTB faculty and staff, provides chess training for student teachers and conducts visits to area schools.
Chess instruction is provided to students at the Brownsville Early College High School.
