The fundamental purpose of the Gallery is to serve as a teaching tool for the university’s art student population. Student taking studio courses are required to participate in the annual Fall and Spring year end reviews. Graduating candidates are required to present senior thesis exhibitions to exit this program. Analogous to the fundamental purpose is that of promoting the Visual Arts to the University’s student body, and also to serve as a chief promoter of Fine Art to the City of Brownsville and surrounding community."

Visual Arts Philosophy

The department is committed to excellence. It is uniquely poised to assist the university in the convening of cultures. The visual arts are an integral part of a liberal arts education. The department is committed to producing graduates who are creative, culturally literate and capable of thinking critically. The arts are among the most essential and ennobling endeavors of humankind, which promotes respect, dignity, and understanding of self and others.
