Welcome to the History Department’s website. Our department offers undergraduate programs in History, History and Teacher Education, and History with a Social Studies Composite, as well as graduate programs in History and Interdisciplinary Studies with a Concentration in History. As an integral part of a liberal arts education, our courses introduce students to different historical eras, diverse cultures, famous and ordinary women and men, and a variety of geographical settings. Following Churchill’s dictum that “it is only from the past that one can judge the future,” our courses challenge students to think critically, express themselves clearly, and become informed and responsible citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.
The History Department faculty is a distinguished group of highly-qualified scholars and teachers. They have published articles and books on topics ranging from local and Texas History to American, European, and Asian History. Three members of the department are recipients of the distinguished University of Texas Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
I invite you to explore our website for information on our undergraduate and graduate programs. Please feel free to contact individual faculty members by telephone, e-mail, or visit them in their offices. Programs of study in history, course descriptions, and a list of our projected class offerings are available on the website.
Very best wishes in your academic careers!
Dr. Thomas Britten
Chair of History Department
