CELAIM Mission Statement and Core Values

The Center of Excellence for Latin American and Iberian Music fosters scholarship, learning and the performance of art, popular, and traditional music from the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world. UTB is uniquely positioned at a culturally fertile intersection of languages and people in the Rio Grande Valley.  The center not only supports regional cultural traditions but it also fosters a valuable sense of connection and pride in a shared Latin American and Iberian cultural heritage that transcends borders through music.  With a base in the UTB Department of Music, The Center of Excellence for Latin American and Iberian Music facilitates the exchange of ideas, students, performers, and scholars united by common interests in this music.

Core Values

The Center of Excellence for Latin American and Iberian Music maintains that music is an important expression of culture.  By studying, listening, and performing music, we learn essential things about being human.  Music is pleasurable and interesting but it also provides insights into both our identities and those of others, fostering understanding, tolerance, and appreciation for the cultures around us. We take the democratic, inclusive stance that all types of music including folk, popular, and art traditions are worthy of academic study and performance. Moreover, as part of the UTB community, we believe that involvement with Latin American and Iberian music benefits the education of individuals, and builds a sense of engagement and shared identity.
