Extraordinary Achievement by UTB Physics Graduate

One of our recent B.S. Physics graduates, Sergio Cantu, has achieved great honors in academics.  Sergio had been awarded the prestigious NSF Graduate Fellowship last year. Sergio’s preparation and research have been deemed exceptional on a national scale, as evidenced by the acceptance offers he has been receiving from all the top schools including MIT, UC Berkeley, Rice University and University of Maryland.  MIT has offered him “one of a very few fellowships that provide full support for three years.” The letter from Maryland states that “there were over 600 applications this year for an entering class of about 30 students in our Department, the Committee's recommendation for your admission reflects their high regard for the strength of your academic record and ability.” All these institutions have offered him full financial support throughout including full tuition waiver – a substantial amount. This is a rare achievement for anyone and a moment of great pride for all of us. This also reflects on the dedication with which department of physics mentors students towards achieving excellence.  Particular recognition must go to Sergio’s mentor, Dr. Malik Rakhmanov, Assistant professor of Physics. Dr. Rakhmanov’s commitment, diligence and zeal towards mentoring undergraduate and graduate students have been exemplary. Many more students mentored by him have done us proud.
