The Department of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences at the University of Texas at Brownsville is focused on excellence in teaching and research. Current research projects include wetland restoration at the Bahia Grande Unit of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, artificial reef monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico, and the impacts of the proposed US-Mexico border fence. We are working with organic molecules, assembling them at the thicknesses of a single molecule as well as nanotechnology. Recently we have begun to look into the recent swine flu epidemic, and our work has even furthered understanding of how indigenous medicinal plants used in the US-Mexico Border region may be used in the treatment of diabetes.

Our research themes are closely integrated with our teaching, providing inspiring courses led by professors that are at the forefront of their respective fields. The department's courses and degree programs in both Chemistry and Environmental Sciences prepare students for graduate school and careers in industry, government and nonprofit organizations. Our faculty embraces the teaching traditions associated with UT Brownsville, while pushing forward with an aggressive research agenda in line with The University of Texas System's mission.

We are a growing and vibrant department. We encourage new students to stop in to visit with one of our advisors to learn more about our degree programs and activities. We encourage you to contact us with any additional questions.
