Masters Degrees

Master of Science

Summer I is the last semester we will admit graduate students as UTB students. Those applicants applying for Summer II or later semesters will be admitted by a UTRGV MSCS admission commitee according to UTRGV requirements.

The Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) provides an advanced and in-depth coverage of the field. In addition to setting a strong foundation for further graduate studies at doctoral level, the MSCS allows a number of elective courses in computer science to prepare future master graduates in a computing field of specialization. The degree requires 36 semester credit hours of computer science courses at graduate level as follows:

Complete all the three courses in one of the following categories:

Theory of Computation

  • COSC 5361 Computability Theory
  • COSC 5362 Complexity Theory
  • COSC 5345 Advanced Algorithm Analysis

Systems Development

  • COSC 5315 Advanced Computer Networks
  • COSC 5346 Advanced Software Engineering
  • COSC 5349 Computer Architecture

Scientific Computing

  • COSC 5360 Numerical Methods
  • COSC 5343 Data Mining
  • COSC 5381 Bioinformatics

  • 21 advanced semester credit hours of prescribed elective courses in computer science at graduate level to be selected in consultation with the student's thesis advisor and with graduate advisor's approval.
